When I first started off, I did lots of puzzles and didn't improve. At some point, I started going through Alekhine's game collection, mostly for fun.
Over the next few months, my rating went up by 150 points. The thing I remember most was how Alekhine constantly made threats. When I did started making tactical threat after threat, my opponents would miss one & my work at puzzles paid off.
This seems right to me. I am a beginning/ middling player and have puzzlitis. I am trying to recover from it. I suspect tools like chessbase's replay trainer or chess hero can be more helpful.
In a perfect world you might have some version of guess the move, decode chess, and move by move chess books bundled into a package.
The thought being that you replay the master game selecting your own moves. When you select a move decode chess can give you a generic answer as to why the move is good/bad and the move played can be explained as to why it is good/bad more fully by the move by move author.

Yes I think there's room for more creative puzzle formats!
